ProHelp offers local businesses the opportunity to make a real difference to the success of community organisations that have big plans and limited resources. 3) Social Enterprise Update
 
Social Enterprise Steering Group Joined by 2 New Social Enterprises
 
Two more social enterprises, The Big Lemon Bus and Brighton Housing Trust, have joined Brighton & Hove’s Social Enterprise Steering Group. The vibrant group now consists of 4 social enterprises, representatives from Brighton & Hove City Council (both Communities and European Departments), University of Brighton, the private sector, Business Link and Se2 Partnership (the regional social enterprise network).
 
Social Enterprise Action Plan

The steering group are working hard to finalise the action plan for the delivery of the social enterprise strategy. The plan is being submitted to Cabinet in September so, all being well, it should be endorsed and ready to hit the streets some time in the autumn.
 
Equalities Impact Assessment on the Action Plan
 
Alongside the development of the action plan an Equalities Impact Assessment is being carried out in order to examine how equality and diversity is considered by the steering group and within the Action Plan.

2) Wanted!  Female Social Enterprise Advocate for SEEDA
 
Wanted!  Could you be Female Social Enterprise Advocate for SEEDA?
 
The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) is expanding its portfolio of Women’s Enterprise Advocates and is looking to recruit a successful women entrepreneur working in a Social Enterprise. 
 
Through the advocacy programme, SEEDA aims to increase representation of women’s business issues in the media and encourage more women to step into business-ownership.  Advocates can expect to raise their profile and receive personal invitations to speak at women’s networks, schools and events.  Advocates will gain the opportunity to influence women’s enterprise policy at local, regional and national level, while offering support, encouragement, promotion and advice to women entrepreneurs.

3) ESF Community Grants Available for 3rd Sector
 
Grants of up to £12,000 are available to third sector organisations in the South East through the small grants scheme run by Surrey Community Action and administered in Sussex by Action in Rural Sussex. Applications are invited from charity or 'not for profit' and voluntary and community organisations based and providing services in Sussex to support the most disadvantaged individuals not in employment to access further learning opportunities or progress to employment.
 
Priority will be given to groups who work with:

  • Lone parents 
  • Women 
  • People with health/disability issues
  • Older people (50 years plus)
  • People from ethnic minorities and diverse communities

5) The Social Investment Business: Financing Growth in the Third Sector Conference

A special half-day conference and networking lunch, hosted by Futurebuilders England, on how to finance the continued growth of the third sector.

The event is designed for charity chief executives, finance directors, trustees and other third sector leaders and will be exploring what more might be done by social investors, Government and the private sector to provide investment finance to help the sector continue to grow. It will also examine the future of public service delivery.

The conference is hosted by Futurebuilders England, in association with leading fundraising, management and recruitment consultancy, Action Planning. The programme includes:

6) New Trustee Matching Group on the Cupp Network
 
To bring community and voluntary sector organisations and potential trustees together, Cupp has set up a Trustee Matching Group on the Cupp Network. The Cupp Network is a social networking site for anyone involved or interested in community-university engagement. This is to help the many community and voluntary sector organisations looking for additional members for their boards of trustees to access the significant pool of potential recruits available through universities.
 
This group offers opportunities:
  • for community and voluntary sector organisations looking for additional members for their board of trustees to advertise available positions for free with a view to recruiting University of Brighton staff and other local universities
  • for University staff, who are looking for an opportunity to support their local community while enhancing their own personal and professional development to search for suitable openings as a member of a board of trustees. 
  • to access more information on what being a trustee means.

7) National Photography Competition Calling for Entries that Capture and Celebrate Social Enterprise  
 
The second annual Social Enterprise Day Photography Competition has been launched. This year, the competition is looking to reward the best amateur photographs that show how social enterprise is 'more than just business as usual'. The winning photographs will capture how social enterprises are leading the way in sustainable, successful business that is transforming communities and lives every day.  
 
Entries are being accepted across England from today until 19 October. Winners will be announced on 19 November, Social Enterprise Day - a national day to celebrate and promote social enterprise.  
 
All entries should be emailed hi-res (no less than 2MB) to photocompetition@socialenterprise.org.uk. For a full list of rules and regulations click here, or for more details and the winning photos from last year, here.


8) Consultation for the Updated Sustainable Community Strategy for Brighton & Hove
 
Creating the City of Opportunities, the Sustainable Community Strategy for Brighton and Hove is currently being updated with a refreshed version due to be published early 2010.
 
As part of the process of creating the strategy, three public information events will be held at the Jubilee Library on:
 
  • 3rd September (6pm - 8pm),
  • 9th September (12pm - 6pm)
  • 15th September (6pm - 8pm).
These informal drop in sessions will be an opportunity for members of the public to find out more about the Brighton & Hove Local Strategic Partnership, its members, and the Sustainable Community Strategy.
 
This will be an opportunity to provide feedback and comment about the content of the strategy, what you would like to see within it, which issues are most important to you. You will also be able to obtain information about the family of partnerships and the work they are involved in.

8) B.S.c.e.ne Launch

BCP would like to pass on news of the launch of a new partnership between Westwerks and the Life Project.  B.S.c.e.ne - the Brighton Social Creative Entrepeneurs NEtwork - will launch at a free event on Thursday 10th September from 6pm - 8pm, at Westwerks, 41-43 Portland Road, Hove, BN3 5DQ.
