Call of Nature Networking Event 2006
Over 100 people from some of Brighton's leading businesses and voluntary organisations attended the Business Community Partnership winter networking event where they drew inspiration from nature on building cross-sectoral partnerships. The event generated an estimated £250,000 worth of in-kind and volunteer support through new collaborations between the city's charities and local businesses.
Participants listened to a talk by Professor Tim Roper from the University of Sussex who outlined successful and improbable partnerships between animals. Using the example of fish that pick parasites off each other's teeth, he emphasised that co-operation works when both parties have something to gain. Businesses acknowledged that even when volunteering their time and skills in the community, they benefit through increased motivation and improved reputation in the city.
Thea Allison, director of the Business Community Partnership, said "We particularly encourage the exchange of in-kind resources. Sometimes people don't realise how much this is worth to the local economy, but it is extraordinarily valuable, and really fun – it was fantastic to see our partners buzzing with enthusiasm for this way of working!"
The event attracted 31 businesses, 23 community and voluntary organisations and 4 statutory organisations. Over the next few months the Business Community Partnership will be working with them all to realise a huge variety of projects that will contribute to the social and economic well-being of the city.
One business person said, "The event was excellent! I loved the structured networking environment – and made some really useful contacts".
Brighton and Hove Business Community Partnership works with organisations of all shapes, sizes and sectors to facilitate participation in the local community. BCP's projects provide exciting opportunities for businesses to get involved in community projects and for community organisations and charities to access the skills and resources of city firms.
