Team Building Challenge at Whitehawk Primary School
A team from City College Brighton & Hove recently spent the day helping Whitehawk Primary School turn a corridor into a sensory area where children could develop their learning skills in calm yet stimulating surroundings. The aim here was ‘to create a safe…and caring environment in which everyone can work, play and build relationships, to enable all to achieve their potential', and the team from City College Brighton & Hove pitched in to help paint a sea-life mural around the walls.
The work area was painted as if at the bottom of the sea, and whilst two of the volunteers continued this theme down the corridors, the rest set about drawing freehand and projected pictures of "all sorts of weird and wonderful wildlife" on the walls. Some of the pupils, fresh from producing prize-winning sea-life drawings, joined in and leant a hand with the painting, helping to create a truly vibrant space for the School.
Samantha Trinder, the HR Adminstrator for City College Brighton & Hove said that the sensory area "looked fantastic once we had finished, and best of all we all got to enjoy a good old fashioned school dinner! The team worked together brilliantly, evenly sharing the workload, contributing brushes, paints and images to the challenge, and working hard. It was a great opportunity to meet people from different areas of the College and make new friendships." The team leader for the day, Katie Kassir found the experience "character building", and said that "the volunteers experienced camaraderie" and got a real "sense of achievement" out of the day's work.
