Taking a Chance and Flying
Andy Barber became street homeless for 6 months living in St Patrick's night shelter during this time. When he applied to come on the Business Action on Homelessness programme he had not worked for a year. His morale was very low through the experience of becoming and being homeless and unemployed.
Through BAOH Andy was offered a placement at Marks & Spencer Brighton store. He took up this opportunity and started to regain his self-esteem and confidence, "the fact that you are earning your money (Job Seekers Allowance, benefit) and getting up in the morning, having a structure to the day. The feeling of accomplishment was the best".
After completing his placement and accepting a full time post at Marks & Spencer Andy was matched with a Job Coach as part of the post placement support that BAOH offer. Louise, a business volunteer from Mott MacDonald's Energy Division found the experience gave her 'a real sense of achievement when you talk through how to resolve something together'. Andy and Louise met regularly for 4 months, Andy found it was a good time to have a job coach first, and this encouraged me to open myself up to new experiences. It was my trusting relationship with Louise that enabled me to voice my concerns".
